How I Sanity Check a Stock Before Investing – and the Database I Built for You
Most investors don’t lack information. They lack a structured way to verify whether a stock actually holds beneath the surface – and that’s where mistakes happen.
The problem
Revenue grows. Margins look stable. Valuation seems reasonable. On paper, everything works.
But underneath, something often doesn’t: returns weaken, cash flow becomes inconsistent, leverage creeps up.
Each signal looks fine in isolation. Together, they tell a different story.
The shift
Over time, I stopped looking at metrics individually. Instead, I started asking one question:
Does this business actually hold together?
To answer that, I built a simple sanity check.
The Financial X-Ray
A structured view that connects: financial health, growth, management quality and valuation.
Not as separate metrics but as a system. The goal is not more data. It’s clarity.
What it looks like in practice — Nike
Nike is widely seen as a high-quality business.
A dominant global brand, strong returns and a solid balance sheet suggest resilience.
At first glance, valuation appears reasonable.
The stock trades at a level that suggests fair support.
But the operating picture tells a different story.
Revenue growth is weakening. Margins are compressing. Returns on capital are declining. Cash flow remains positive – but no longer improves.
The direction is clear: the business is losing operating strength
Now run the X-Ray:
Financial health: Medium – supported by the balance sheet, not by operating strength
Growth: Weak – momentum has deteriorated materially
Management: Medium – stable execution, but no clear inflection
Valuation: Medium – appears supported, but lacks fundamental backing
→ Conclusion: A strong brand – but a weakening operating engine
The disconnect only becomes visible when these signals are read together. Individually, nothing looks broken. But the trajectory is.
What changes
The numbers didn’t change. The interpretation did.
That’s the difference between information vs decision confidence
From analysis to system
I’ve started applying this framework consistently across companies. Not as long reports. But as a compact, guided analysis – a second lens before committing capital.
The X-Ray database
The same structure is now applied across S&P 50 companies and I will subsequently add to the database.
Each X-Ray is a 3-page sanity check that brings together:
what matters
how it interacts
what it implies
All in one view. You can explore it here:
The idea
Most stocks look fine in isolation.
